Can't Take My Rye-s Off Of You: Top 5 Bristolian Valentine's Day Spots

Writer: Guild Of DoughGuild Of Dough

They say that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach - and we say that there's a reason that Cupid's arrow is the same shape as a baguette! Valentine's Day is just a week away, but, if you haven't quite got round to making plans, we've got you covered with Guild's top five recommendations for a romance-filled February 14th:

  1. Moltobuono!, Park Street

Get your Lady / Tramp on and head down to Park Street's favourite trattoria for a bella notte. This restaurant is all about tradition - it's family-run, and uses their own ancestral recipes for their freshly-made pasta and pizza bases. Prefer plants to parmigiano? They've also got a full vegan menu on offer. With an intimate setting, warm service, and house-made tiramisu, Moltobuono is sure to put you in the mood for amore.

    2. Number 38 Clifton, The Downs

Number 38 doesn't skimp on the extras for that five-star feeling; en-suite rooms, views of the Downs, and a roof terrace make this boutique hotel more than just a bed and breakfast. Not quite done for the evening? Grab a nightcap in the bar - or order drinks to your room if the night's going especially well. Number 38 is in just the right location for a picturesque walk over the Downs, so it's perfect for building up an appetite for their delicious and locally-sourced breakfast.

  1. Mangosteen, Cotham Hill

If you're looking for somewhere a bit less formal and a bit more flirty, Mangosteen's small plates are just the thing for a Far Eastern adventure. Contemporary design, relaxed vibes, and an intimate setting make this the perfect location for showing off your chill-eating prowess. From plant-based pad thai to steamy soft-shell crab, there's something for everyone. Worried about not getting a table? They've just opened a sister restaurant on North Street, if you fancy a jaunt south of the river.

  1. La Guinguette, The Arches

The Marais, the Seine, the Eiffel Tower - iconic, but a bit far from the Suspension Bridge. Fear not! With its unassuming exterior and classic bistro interior, it's obvious that Jérome and Roxane have brought real Parisian elegance with them from their corner of the 16th. La Guinguette's compact menu is packed with French favourites, from hearty main courses to perfectly shareable apéro-inspired boards. Add in a couple of glasses of their crisp and reasonably-priced crémant, finish up with a café gourmand - ah, c'est si bon!

Gambas, Wapping Wharf
Gambas, Unit 12, Cargo 2, Museum Street, Bristol, BS1 6ZA

Harbourside dining at its finest, Gambas' location is more than enough of a reason to take that special someone out. Grab a seat on their heated terrace, order a glass of something crisp and cold, then tuck into some sharing plates for the perfect waterfront aperitif. Whether you're a fish lover or prefer something a bit more land-based, Gambas offers something for every palate. Not quite done? Stick around for one of their house-made desserts - or go rogue and finish off with an oh-so-continental cheese course.

Happy Valentine's Day!
