Dough-n't Look Back In Anger

The 90s. A decade of landlines, playing outside, and drinks that accidentally turned us orange (RIP original Sunny D).

It feels like we revisit a random decade every year as some kind of nostalgia kick, but this year’s trend is a little closer to today: the 90s Butter Mom. Think Chessy from The Parent Trap, Miss Honey from Matilda, or Jill from Home Improvement. It’s about wellies, VHS players, double denim, freshly-picked flowers, dungarees, gingham. So much gingham.

And, of course, food.

The 90s butter mom is about comfort and nostalgia. There’s food, but it’s not about everything being made from scratch. There’s nothing wrong with the occasional frozen pizza, a potato smiley, a weekday Cornetto. It’s an everything-in-moderation, Coke-on-a-Wednesday, sun-drenched-mornings kind of lifestyle.

Here are our dinnertime suggestions for those classic 1997 vibes.

Spaghetti Bolognese

It’s a staple for a reason! Mince (or Quorn, for those retro vegetarians), tomatoes, Italian seasonings, slow-cooked and piled on top of slightly overdone spaghetti. Split a Guild of Dough baguette in half, slather on butter, dried garlic and parsley, then pop it in the oven for a few minutes until it’s golden and crispy. Pair it with some iceberg lettuce, a fridge-cold Schweppes lemonade, and finish your evening with one of those new Solero ice lollies.

Sandwich Night

It’s Friday, everyone’s tired, and we’re making do with whatever’s in the freezer. Slice some Guild of Dough farmhouse, then top with mayonnaise, ketchup, and oven-fresh fish fingers. Cut into rectangles, and serve it alongside carrot sticks, celery sticks, and a handful of ready salted crisps. Finish it off with a mini can of Coke and a Mr Kipling Angel Slice.

Sausage and Mash

For those dinner-in-a-rush evenings. Mash some boiled potatoes with milk, salt, and an unreasonable amount of butter, and stick some sausages under the grill. No time for gravy? A tin of beans will do the job, as well as break the monotony of white plate / brown table / white mash / brown sausages. Add a glass of orange squash, and a Guild of Dough brownie to share on the sofa once the evening mayhem’s ended.

Saturday Night Takeaway

Everyone’s favourite easy tea. Pick up some slices of Guild of Dough pizza in the morning, then pop them in the oven for a refresh once everyone’s home in the evening. Serve alongside oven chips, ketchup, and a crisp Appletise (or, if you’re feeling really fancy, a limited edition Lemontise). Dessert? Screwballs all round.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned from this trend, it’s that you don’t win friends with salad.
