From the bright lights of Broadway to the Empire State Building, yellow cabs to the subway, fresh bagels to Big Apples, there’s nothing like New York in autumn.
Like Bristol.
Which is absolutely nothing like New York in autumn.
But, with a bit of imagination, a big scarf, and some totally weather-inappropriate sunglasses, you can bring a little bit of NYC to Gloucester Road.

Peep This
The term ‘leaf peeping’ gets thrown around a lot these days. And by ‘thrown around’, I mean ‘not used by anyone this side of the Atlantic’.
Essentially, you go out and look at autumn foliage - but that has none of the charm or romance of ‘leaf peeping’. For the best places to catch some colours, Narroways nature reserve is just behind St Werburgh’s City Farm. If you’re looking for something a bit further afield, head to the woodlands around Ashton Court. A misty morning, a hot PSL from Guild Of Dough - it’s basically Central Park.

Grab A Slice
Forget khlav kalash - the latest NYC trend to hit the streets of Bristol is pizza. Authentic New York pizza is thin crust and sold by the slice, usually to go. If you’re in the mood for an on-the-hoof bite, Ernie’s in Wapping Wharf has all your favourites, from spicy pepperoni to indulgent carbonara. If you’re looking for more of a dine-in option, Pizza Is Lovely on King Street has something for everyone - from New York to Detroit-style, plant-based to classic cheese, all you need to add is a frosty LHG beer.
Greenwich Village? Clifton Village.
Sure, it’s not quite the West Side, but it’s just the right level of picturesque for an autumn day out. Start off with a Bloody-Mary-optional brunch at Primrose Cafe, then head to Waterloo Street for a spot of antiquing at Focus On The Past. Pop to pod for a browse of their gorgeous homewares, then mosey on down to the Mall Deli for a hot sandwich and an oh-so-trendy prebiotic soda. Finish your day with a trip to The Albion for a fireside chat and some dog-spotting. Fancy something a bit more avant garde? Head to Bristol’s very own jazz club for a show or, if you’re lucky, some close-up magic.
The Shop Around The Corner
There’s nothing more Kathleen Kelly than falling in love with a stranger through instant messager curling up with a good book. bookhaus on Wapping Wharf has something for everybody, from children’s literature to cooking to colonial history. For some treasure hunting, dig through Second Page in The Galleries for an unmatched selection of second-hand volumes. The Last Bookshop on Park Street is perfect for those on a budget, with all books costing £5 or less. Feeling spooky? Head to female-owned The Haunted Bookshop on Stokes Croft if you lean more Practical Magic than Dead Poet’s Society.
If It’s Tangy And Brown, You’re In Cider Town
Like Paris and rats, you’re statistically unlikely* to be more than thirty feet away from a decent cider anywhere in Bristol. New York may be the Big Apple, but few places have more of a devotion to cider than Bristol. From The CoriTap in Clifton to The Orchard Inn on Spike Island, our city has a range of pubs devoted to this local tipple.
Our favourite? The Apple. It’s literally a boat filled with cider. What could be more Bristol New York than that?
